This course is suitable for students with a Beginner knowledge of Spanish (i.e. have attended a full Beginner course, received around 30 hours of tuition or picked up the basic language while travelling). Before joining the course, students should have learned how to use the Present Tense and Present Continuous Tense. Students should have previously covered most of the content in the course programme for our Beginner 2 level.

The level A2.1 refers to the European CEFR levels, not the UK A-Levels (which is a higher level).

By the end of the course you will have acquired the necessary language skills to understand a native speaker talking to you about the topics we covered in the course. You will also be able to talk with more confidence about the topics we covered in the course.

After completing this course, students will be able to continue with their Spanish studies by joining the Elementary 2 course (A2.2).

 Week 1 – Unit 1: El español y tú (Spanish language and you) 

  • Teacher’s welcome and very brief introduction to the course and coursebook
  • Students’ brief introductions in Spanish 
  • Activity to meet up and connect
  • Revision of Present Tense
  • Expressing duration 

Week 2 – Unit 1: El español y tú (Spanish language and you) 

  • Talking about feelings
  • Expressing difficulty
  • Things we can do to learn Spanish

Week 3 – Unit 4: Hogar dulce hogar (Home sweet home)

  • Describing different types of housing & their price
  • Parts of the house
  • Understanding someone talking about their home
  • Possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his, hers…)
  • Our favourite part of the house

Week 4 – Unit 4: Hogar dulce hogar (Home sweet home) 

  • Describing furniture & expressing likes/dislikes
  • Talking about where things are located
  • Comparison structures

Week 5 – Unit 3: Yo soy así (I am this way – This is who I am)

  • Describing people with SER/TENER/LLEVAR
  • Vocabulary to describe relationships
  • Possessive pronouns
  • To look like someone/to look alike 
  • Difference between “parecer” and “parecerse”

Week 6 – Unit 3: Yo soy así (I am this way – This is who I am) 

  • Identifying people in a group (1)
  • Identifying people in a group (2)
  • Express “to get on well with someone” and “to like/dislike someone”
  • Difference between “llevar” and “llevarse bien/mal”

Week 7 – Unit 5: ¿Cómo va todo? (How’s everything going?)

  • Saying what we are doing (ESTAR+Gerund)
  • Being polite in Spanish and social expressions
  • Social expressions

Week 8 – Unit 5: ¿Cómo va todo? (How’s everything going?)

  • Asking for favours vs asking for permission (formal & informal)
  • Asking for things vs borrowing things
  • Giving excuses or justifications

Week 9 – Unit 5:  

  • Introduction to one of the main 3 past tenses: Pretérito Perfecto (TBC)
  • Talking about past and recent experiences (TBC)

Week 10 – Revision

  • Activities to revise Units 1, 3, 4 and 5

Terms & Conditions

  • There will be a maximum of 15 students in the class for large groups and 9 for small groups.
  • The course materials included in the price are any materials used in class (i.e. handouts, games, PDFs, Power Points, audio files and links to online activities), which will be sent by email as well.
  • Students will have to purchase a course book.
  • The course fee paid for this course will only be transferrable to future courses in exceptional circumstances.
  • Missed classes policy: if a student misses one or more classes, the teacher will send them an email with the learning materials used in class during those sessions so they can catch up at home. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up and continue attending their course. Missed lessons will not be refunded. Students who have missed a considerable number of lessons cannot automatically retake this lessons in the next term as the fee paid is for the current course only. However, the school may offer them the opportunity to retake the lessons if, after the enrolment period has finished, some of the places have not been filled.
  • Cancellation policy: if a student wishes to withdraw from the course, they must notify SCB by email. With 2 weeks notice or more, full refund. With 1 week notice, 50 % refund. With less than 1 week notice, no refund.
  • For the course to go ahead, a minimum of 6 students is required. If the week before the course starts a group has less than 6 students registered, that group may have to be cancelled and registered students will receive a full refund. Alternatively, the course can still go ahead, but the fee will have to be increased.
  • This course does not lead to an official certificate; students can register for official DELE or GCSE exams independently. SCB can advise on where to take the exams and offer additional exam preparation classes.
